Galileo finally takes off

On Friday October 12, 2012 two additional satellites of “Galileo” have been launched. These satellites mark a major step towards the independent European GNSS as an alternative or a complement for the American GPS.

The satellites will join two other space vehicles launched earlier for the first usable navigation configuration based on Galileo. The four satellites are part of the in-orbit-validation (IOV) constellation. When the first tests are completed they allow an independent navigation solution. For sure there are a number of researchers out there booting up their receivers now. The race has been started for being the first to have accomplished such an independent solution.
